How does micro-needling work?

Microneedling is a form of collagen induction therapy. To begin our Wyckoff NJ microneedling team will either apply a hyaluronic serum or the client’s platelet-rich plasma (PRP) to the skin. After selecting the proper settings for the targeted areas, we then perform the Eclipse MicroPen® professional treatment using a 12-point sterile cartridge tip.

How long does the microneedling procedure take?

The microneedling treatment itself does not take that long to perform. In most cases it’s completed within an hour. The actual application of the Eclipse MicroPen® averages from 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the area treated and the patient’s skin condition.

What is platelet-rich plasma, aka “Liquid Gold”?

Using platelet-rich plasma (PRP) during microneedling can stimulate collagen production by 1000% after only two treatments. This is done by mixing a small sample of the patient’s blood with a special reagent. The platelets in the blood contain a growth factor that promotes cellular regeneration and accelerates the healing process, giving your skin a smoother surface, and a fresher, more youthful appearance.

Before beginning the microneedling aesthetic treatments, a medical provider draws a vial of the client’s blood and places it in a centrifuge. The spinning separates the platelet-rich plasma, which is then extracted from the vial.

The application of platelets stimulates different types of growth factors in the area that is being treated:

  • Fibroblast growth factor for collagen production and tissue repair
  • Epidermal growth factor, which helps promote wound healing, epithelial cell growth and angiogenesis
  • Platelet-derived growth factor for collagen production and cell growth, as well as regeneration and repair of blood vessels
  • Vascular endothelial growth factor for the generation and growth of vascular endothelial cells
  • Transforming growth factor Beta 1, which promotes wound healing and the growth of endothelial and epithelial cells
  • Keratinocyte growth factor for the generation and growth of new keratinocytes

Which areas of the body can be treated?

Microneedling can be used on all skin types to treat a variety of problems. The most common areas that patients want to rejuvenate are the face (the forehead, the nose area, the cheeks) and décolleté. Unless your medical provider determines otherwise, almost all areas of the body can be treated to get younger, healthier skin.

Is there any downtime?

Immediately after microneedling, you will experience a feeling of sunburn, and your skin might take on a pink to bright-red appearance. Downtime typically ranges from 24 hours to 72 hours, but in most cases clients are up and running the following day.

Your skincare specialists will suggest the right post-treatments and skin care products to reduce discomfort and speed up recovery, based on your skin type and personal needs. Just like after chemical peels or plastic surgery, there are also some restrictions as part of your micro-needling post-treatment. Patients should avoid any anti-aging skin care product that contains harsh chemicals meant to exfoliate, retinol and vitamin C.

When will I see results from microneedling?

Unlike other facials, you will begin to see changes directly after your microneedling treatment, and in the six following months. Once the redness has cleared up, you will experience a little dryness and then a beautiful, natural glow. Your face will be in great shape, which will enhance your confidence and your self-esteem. The healthier the skin is before treatment, the quicker you will see results.

How many microneedling treatments are needed?

The number of treatments required for this procedure depends on the areas that are targeted and varies from one client to another. The more treatments you do, the more results you will see.
